Glossary

  •  Original: An original work is the physical piece of art work created from the hand of the artist. It is the source from which all copies and reproductions are made.
  • Open edition (OE):  A series of artwork in an art edition that has an unlimited number of copies.
  • Limited Edition (LE): A Limited edition print is one in which a limited number of identical prints are produced in order to create a scarcity. The prints are signed by the artist and sequentially numbered to show the print number and edition size.

  • Artist’s proofs (AP):  In addition to the regular numbered edition, artists may reserve a specific number of prints for museum and gallery use or his or her own personal use. The number of prints in the AP edition is usually 10-15% of the regular numbered edition. These proofs are designated as "Artist's Proofs" (A/P) and are marked by the artist (marking example: AP 1/50 indicates the first print of an edition of 50 Artist proofs).  Artist proofs usually rank higher in value than the S/N's of the regular numbered edition.

  • Remarqué (RM):   Remarqué limited edition prints have an unique small hand-drawn sketch by the artist in the margin next to the artist's signature or edition number. This feature increases the value of the edition.

  • Lithograph:   A mechanical process used to reproduce an image using a computer, typesetting, and design software.  Lithographic prints can be an open edition, limited edition or poster.  Majority of reproductions are created using the lithographic process.
  • Gicleé:   Giclee (zhee-klay) - The French word "giclée" means a spray or spurt of liquid. The term "giclée print" refers to prints generated from high resolution digital scans printed with archival quality inks onto various substrates including canvas, fine art, and photo-base paper. Giclée prints are high quality prints commonly found in art galleries and museums.
  • Hand Embellished - A process of painting onto a giclee edition after it is printed. The artist will usually pick out certain areas to highlight, either to create a texture similar to the original, or to pick out gold and metallic colours that can't be reproduced.
  • Certificate of Authenticity- A document issued with limited edition prints, which includes the print publisher's information, title of the image, size of the image, reproduction media/method, and number of prints in the edition.
